Academy of Art University Wows at New York Fashion Show

New York Fashion Week is well-known as one of the most highly regarded events in fashion throughout the world. Emerging artists and designers have the opportunity to show off their work and personal style, and one of the most talented group of individuals came from the School of Fashion of the Academy of Art University. Combining unique color schemes and fabric textures, ten of the brightest and most promising School of Fashion graduates displayed their hard work on the runway.

The Academy of Art University, located in San Francisco, California, is home to an extremely diverse student body, which is reflected in the clothing itself. Students from all over the world presented their work. It’s no surprise that the Academy of Art University boasts such talent; it is thought of as the largest private school for all things art in America, and many students fight for a spot in this prestigious university.

The school was founded in 1929 by artist and editor Richard Stephens, but they’ve only been participating in New York Fashion Week since the early 2000s. They’ve certainly come a long way from their initial enrollment of about only two thousand students! Part of the draw to the program stems from the wide array of degrees that they offer, along with the option to take courses online and prestigious staff members.

The 2017 New York Fashion Show was a success for these students for a number of reasons. Elite guests, such as America’s Next Top Model figures, were highly impressed with the student’s work and collaboration. Their hard work for the past few years paid off in a matter of minutes when the world saw their collections and intricate designs.

There were a number of stand-out students in the group as well, including Eden Slezin of the Bay Area, who was inspired by retro jean material, and Dina Marie Lam of Los Angeles, who lists the death of her aunt as an inspiration for how she wanted her pieces to feel. Congratulations to all of the students of the School of Fashion! Your hard work has paid off.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin’s Journey

Michael Lacey was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey. Jim Larkin was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. The story of how these two met isn’t all that impressive. Lacey moved to Arizona in the late 60s to attend Arizona State University. Larkin was already attending Arizona State University.

Lacey’s path started him toward media fame first. He was surprised to see the level of ultra-conservative coverage of campus antiwar protests.

He started Phoenix New Times as a weekly response to the biased coverage of local events. Larkin joined New Times as the brand grew beyond just a campus paper.

The two dropouts soon had a regional success on their hands. Lacey was executive editor and Larkin was in charge of advertising. Together, they explored a wide variety of social and political issues that were ignored or rarely discussed in Arizona at that time.

Their journey eventually led them to the doorstep of Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Joe Arpaio is not a kind man and doesn’t like being talked about unless people are praising him. When New Times started reporting on his activities, he did not respond well to that sort of attention. Learn more about Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey:

Beyond the obvious crimes that corrupt law enforcement officers are involved in, which created several financial irregularities, Sheriff Arpaio also horrible ran his office. It seemed like the only thing Arpaio could properly manage were anti-Mexican fear-mongering rallies. That’s right; the sheriff played a patriarchal role in racist bigotry rallies, which makes him feel pride.

Up until the nation found out about all of his atrocities, he’d felt pride. He happily tormented and harassed Latinos. New Times had physical evidence of his systematic persecution, profiling, and detention of hundreds of Latinos. Read more: Michael Lacey | Twitter and Phoenix New Times | Wikipedia

Because he lived in such a conservative-bubbled community, he was allowed to this these things whenever he chose.

When it came to trying to stop New Times from writing stories, Arpaio did not enjoy that so much. He was used to using his power to silence all of his critics. Having some Latino-supporters fighting his will enraged him to the point that he was willing to risk it all.

On October 18, 2007, Sheriff Arpaio had Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin arrested. That proved to be the last nail in his coffin. When the nation discovered what he had done, it ended his career.

Jim Larkin And Michael Lacey’s Fight For Justice In The Frontera Fund

When it comes to battling the forces of what you believe inhibit freedom and justice for all, the old saying is that “the pen is mightier than the sword.” Journalists Jim Larkin and Michael Lacy have lived by this saying and have been serving for a long time as voices of dissenters and more recently as advocates for fair immigration laws.

Larkin and Lacey understand just how difficult life is for the many Latino families who pour across the nation’s border each year, and at their publication and charity company the Frontera Fund, they put out articles and raise money to help needy immigrant families.

One of Lark and Lacey’s biggest foes has been former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio who was recently voted out by county residents in the 2016 elections. After losing that election, many people who felt Arpaio ruled the county with an iron fist thought they may have seen the last of him when the news became that Arpaio may be heading to the very jail that he detained both legal and illegal immigrants in.

But they became disappointed when it was announced that President Trump would pardon him. Yet it’s not deterred Larkin and Lacey From now seeking to undo the former Sheriff’s actions through their activism.

Jim Larkin and Michael Lacy both have a long history in journalism dating all the way back to the 1960s during the Vietnam War.

It was a cartoon that was published in a Phoenix newspaper portraying a protester in a bad light that had Michael Lacey, a then Arizona State University student upset and wanting the real stories to be made known about student activists. Learn more about Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey: and

It wasn’t long after that he started having them published in a small paper under Village Voice Media, a media company that’s been the parent to the Phoenix New Times and other editions published in other cities. Jim Larkin soon joined Lacey and the two started building a large newspaper conglomerate over the years.

The Phoenix New Times has been Larkin and Lacey’s chief Village Voice Media production, but there’s been a lot of similar editions that have been started in other major cities across the US. The two executives have had quite a few known journalists working under them including Enron scandal author Peter Elkind, and proverbial ESPN and now Fox Sports columnist Skip Bayless.

It was in the mid-2000s that Larkin and Lacey began focusing on immigration issues and particularly called out Sheriff Arpaio for his search and seizure tactics. It wasn’t long though until they themselves were searched and seized without warrants by Arpaio’s deputies, and when the public heard about it they caused such a backlash that Arpaio released the two men instantly.

It wasn’t long after that the two men decided to file a lawsuit against Arpaio in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals which awarded them $3.75 million in damages. It was that money that was used to start the Frontera Fund which has taken off since it
